Why NoRamp runs zero tolerance on Research Use Only

Most payment processors treat Research Use Only as a risk to be priced. We treat it as a line that is either respected or crossed. This page explains why NoRamp chose to be the strictest RUO payment processor in the world, and why that is good news for the small number of suppliers who are doing this properly.

The category has a legitimate core and a large gray market

There is a real, well-regulated market for research-grade peptides and reference materials. Universities, biotech companies, contract research organizations and credentialed laboratories buy these compounds every day for genuine research, with purchase orders, institutional accounts and documented chain of custody.

Surrounding that core is a much larger gray market: consumer-facing storefronts selling the same molecules to individuals under a thin Research Use Only label, with dosing guides one click away, weight-loss and anti-aging positioning, discount codes, subscriptions and influencer marketing. The label says research. Everything else says human use.

Payment processors that serve the gray market usually know exactly what they are doing. They price the risk, collect the fees, and let the merchant carry the regulatory and card-network exposure until the account is terminated. NoRamp does not do that, and we do not want merchants who are looking for a processor that will.

Zero tolerance is the only honest position

The card networks, acquiring banks and regulators do not grade on a curve. Mastercard's Business Risk Assessment and Mitigation program and Visa's Integrity Risk Program assess fines against the acquirer and the processor when a merchant sells prohibited products, and those fines can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. The FDA and FTC do not accept a disclaimer as a defense when a product is plainly marketed for human use.

A processor that tolerates a little gray-market behavior is making a bet with other people's money: the bank's, the network's, and every honest merchant's on the same platform. We are not willing to make that bet. Our position is simple. We are on the side of the card networks, the acquiring banks and the regulators. If a bank, network or regulator asks us about a merchant, we tell them exactly what we found.

Where we stand

NoRamp is not a place to see how close to the line you can operate. A merchant who treats compliance as a presentation problem to be worked around is not a merchant we process for, at any price.

Strictness protects the merchants who are doing it right

Every gray-market operator a processor tolerates raises the cost, the scrutiny and the chargeback exposure for every legitimate supplier in the category. Banks tighten their rules for the whole vertical, not for one bad actor. Being strict is how we keep the category open for the suppliers who deserve to be in it.

That is why we would rather decline ten applicants than approve one who endangers the rest. Our existing merchants, our banking partners and the regulators who oversee this category are the reason the bar is where it is. The bar is not going to move.

Approval is possible. It is just rare.

None of this means NoRamp refuses the category. It means we are extremely selective inside it. A supplier whose customers are actually researchers, whose storefront reads like a laboratory catalog rather than a consumer brand, and whose history contains no processor terminations and no regulatory correspondence can be approved. Those suppliers exist, and we are glad to work with them.

If that describes you, read how our application review works and what the storefront standard requires, then apply. If it does not, this site will save you the application.

NoRamp is the strictest payment processor in the world for Research Use Only. We are on the side of the card networks, the acquiring banks and the regulators, not on the side of a merchant who wants to see how close to the line they can operate. Approval is possible. It is rare, on purpose.
